About

Coaching the whole driver, not only the driving

The Four Horizons is a coaching course for Queensland driver trainers. It starts from one idea: a driver is more than the controls they can work.

A coaching course, made for Queensland and checked for it

The course teaches a way of coaching learner drivers that looks past the controls to the person behind the wheel. Its map is The Four Horizons, taken near to far: The Machine, The Road, The Journey and The Driver, with The World as the outer horizon.

Each chapter is short enough to read between lessons. The framework comes first, and every later chapter builds on it. Coaching is not the absence of instruction, so the course also covers when to tell.

The chapters were rewritten for Queensland. Every statement about a Queensland rule, test or licence is traced to an official source and was checked again in a separate review. The checks are dated. The course also takes positions about how to coach and what a test can show: these are views, not rules, and they carry no source.

The stories show the coaching, not the people in them

The trainer who tells the stories in these chapters, and the learners in them, are composites: names and details changed.

Rules change, so the date matters

This course is about coaching. It is not legal advice. Queensland rules change, and the rules described here were checked as at October 2026. For the current rules, use the Queensland Government and the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
