The Four Horizons

The map of the complete driver: each horizon in turn, near to far, and how the far horizons govern the near.

6 chapters

In this Part

  1. Four horizons, and the gap the test leaves 6 min

The far horizons are where a driver decides which trips to make and who to be when nobody is watching. Every lesson hangs off this map.

  2. The car should disappear, and skill alone is where the danger hides 5 min

Drill the controls until they run without thought and attention comes free for the road. Then face the harder truth: skill drilled to success with no risk talk after is how overconfidence gets built.

  3. Anticipation beats reflexes, and a test can only sample it 6 min

The Road is not car control done faster. The safe driver reads traffic and avoids the conflict the merely skilled driver has to survive, and a test can only sample it.

  4. The safest decision a driver makes happens before the key turns 5 min

The why, where, when and who of a trip are settled before the car moves. The Journey is the horizon that quietly loads or lightens every nearer horizon.

  5. What the driver is willing to do overrides what they can do 6 min

The Driver is the most stable horizon. A learner can drive to please the person beside them, and then the seat empties and they drive as themselves.

  6. The company a driver keeps is in the car with them 4 min

The outer horizon is not a rival to The Driver, it is The Driver seen wider. The crowd and the culture a person answers to are in the car before the key turns.
